Looks like I'm not the only one that shares my sentiments about PETA. I really do believe that they have the potential to be advocates for good, but right now, as you say Marina, they seem to be pushing their brand rather than any real cause.

You're right Lara, I'm sure the person that misses Eight Belles the most is her trainer. I'm no expert, but I do know a bit about horse racing and know first-hand about the bonds that these trainers and jockeys form with their horses. It's just as close as a family bond in many cases.

And Rajio, the comparison to Fox News is harsh, but apt. Looks like PETA might need a new lesson in PR.

PETA doesn't support any cause but their own brand, as a crazy lunatic fringe group. Worse, they've been caught purchasing huge walk-in freezers to store the dead bodies of all the animals they euthanize themselves. Hypocrites.

There are lots of sane, rational, logical animal rights folks. I like to think I'm one of them, though I've been a bad one lately. I disagree with using animals for human gain, and it's clear that horse racing is a dangerous sport for the horses. However, PETA makes me half-inclined to support horse racing just so I don't agree with them.

I've got to agree. If they want to make that stance, then fine but be able to engage in a rational conversation about it if you want to effect change. They're acting no better than Fox News reporters now and really do their cause a disservice.

I couldn't agree more about PETA. It seems they use sad and tragic incidents (sometimes truly accidents) like this one to push forward their agenda. Apparently, they don't care how many harmless people they steamroll over in the process. I'm sure no one cried more or harder over Eight Belles' death than her jockey and trainer!

Ryan, I definitely respect your thoughts on horse racing, and I'm glad you shared them here. I'm even more glad, however, that you did not resort to scapegoating and calling out individuals without any sound research — it shows that you're much more aware than PETA in this case.

PETA definitely did miss the mark here, no matter where anyone stands on the debate over horse racing.

PETA may have missed the mark, but I agree overall the Horse Racing is a cruel and pointless sport. Forcing animals to partake in anything, especially a potentially deadly sport, for the entrainment of humans is just wrong in my books.
